Why Placement Beats Power In Tower Defence

Why Placement Beats Power In Tower Defence

June 20, 2026 · Markus Feldkamp

New players almost always reach for the strongest tower first. I did too. But the games that stuck with me taught the opposite lesson: a cheap unit in the right spot outperforms an expensive one in the wrong lane. The reason is time. Every extra second an enemy spends inside your damage zone is free value. A slow tower placed at a chokepoint stretches that window, and suddenly your weaker damage adds up to a clean wave. My habit now is to map the path before I spend anything. I look for the longest curve, the tightest choke, and the spot where two lanes merge. Those three positions usually decide the whole match. Try this next run: build nothing on the first wave except a single slowing unit at the sharpest turn. Watch how much easier the rest of your placements become.
